We are going to look here at the 4 major reasons why this so-called “trendy” approach is gaining so much momentum!
solid soap, deodorant, toothpaste and shampoo
1-Stop buying water
With conventional shampoos or shower gels, you only need to read the label to realize that water—the famous “aqua”—often makes up between 70 and 80% of the formula, with its only purpose being to dilute it.
Solid cosmetics are used on wet skin or hair; there is no need to add water since you are already wet from head to toe, so you just need to rub and apply the product directly to yourself.
2-Save your money
Let’s look at the wallet side of things: what about how long solid cosmetics last!
We’ve all seen that little sliver of soap by the sink that no one can ever finish; well, solid cosmetics also last a very long time!
A quick estimate of the lifespan of the main zero-waste cosmetics:
-100g body soaps: between 2 and 3 months
-100g solid shampoos: between 4 and 6 months depending on frequency
-40g solid toothpastes: between 5 and 6 months
-60g solid deodorants: about 3 months
Of course, the numbers may vary, but we are referring to the brands used by the team at the store, such as Les savons de Joya, Le moulin à savon, or our homemade recipes by Marie, our beauty DIY specialist.
We can therefore see that their usage duration is enormous, especially when compared to conventional products!
3-More natural formulas
As seen in the other sections, the fact that there is less water is beneficial for us, both economically and in terms of hygiene, since not including water helps stop and limit the growth of bacteria and mold (be sure to let your soaps dry well). This greatly simplifies the formula; no more need for preservatives, stabilizers, or antibacterials with questionable names that are more or less bad for our health!
Many zero-waste cosmetic brands have an initial approach centered on naturalness, such as Le moulin à savon, which is labeled Nature et Progrès, or Les savons de Joya, whose solid cosmetics and products are 100% natural and organic, not tested on animals, palm oil-free, and for the vast majority, vegan and zero waste.
4-Solid cosmetics are eco-friendly
The main process for solid cosmetics like soap, for example, is what is known as cold saponification (a cold chemical reaction between a weak fatty base and a strong base like soda). This process is energy-efficient and requires simple equipment!
Another advantage is that it is very low in water, which makes this process very ecological.
Solid soap manufacturers also pay attention to packaging and its environmental impact, as it is often made of cardboard printed with eco-friendly biodegradable inks, or even recyclable or biodegradable cellulose film!
As the weight of the finished product is particularly light thanks to reduced packaging and the formulation, the CO2 footprint of transport is excellent!
A nice bonus for the planet!!!
