White Tiger Balm — Headaches, Congestion and Minor Aches, 30g
The Asian classic of natural topical care with White Tiger Balm: 30g of balsamic balm based on camphor, menthol, and essential oils of peppermint, eucalyptus, and cinnamon. The cooling version of tiger balm — less warming than the red, more decongesting and refreshing. Used for over 150 years in Southeast Asia for headaches, nasal congestion, and minor muscle pain.
Why does White Tiger Balm work on headaches?
Menthol, the dominant active ingredient in the white balm, activates TRPM8 receptors (cold thermoreceptors) in the skin and mucous membranes. This activation creates a powerful vasoconstricting cooling sensation that relieves pain through counter-irritation and reduces cephalic vasodilation associated with tension headaches. Applied to the temples and forehead, menthol also reduces the subjective perception of pain by saturating nociceptive fibers. For nasal congestion, the inhalation of menthol and eucalyptol (the main component of eucalyptus EO) activates nasal cold receptors, creating a sensation of a cleared nose by activating mechanoreceptors without actual mechanical decongestion — but the perception of nasal freedom is clinically proven (Nanda et al. study).
Benefits of White Tiger Balm
- Relief from headaches and minor migraines: applied in a circular massage to the temples, forehead, and neck, menthol reduces cephalic pain through local vasoconstriction and counter-irritation. A randomized controlled study (Göbel et al., 1994) showed efficacy equivalent to 1g of paracetamol for tension headaches after the application of 10% menthol.
- Relief from nasal congestion: the vapors of menthol, eucalyptol, and camphor inhaled during application under the nostrils (with gentle rubbing) activate nasal cold receptors and create an immediate perception of a cleared nose. Ideal for colds, minor sinusitis, and allergic congestion.
- Relief from minor muscle pain: camphor and menthol exert an analgesic counter-irritation on superficial muscle tension, minor aches, and neck stiffness. Milder than the red version, the white is suitable for minor pain and sensitive skin.
- Rapidly absorbed effect, relief in minutes: the balsamic formula of tiger balm penetrates quickly into the superficial layers of the epidermis. Relief is generally felt 3 to 5 minutes after application.
