Organic Wintergreen Essential Oil
Looking for the essential oil highest in methyl salicylate, with that characteristic fresh-minty-wintergreen scent found in sports massage preparations, for a powerful diluted topical treatment for muscle and joint areas? The Organic Wintergreen Essential Oil by Herbes et Traditions (Gaultheria procumbens) is distilled from the leaves of the American wintergreen. Composed of 95-99% methyl salicylate, it is almost a single-molecule essential oil, with a unique profile in aromatherapy. Fresh, minty, very powerful wintergreen scent. Ecocert organic certified. Herbes et Traditions.
Aromatic and cosmetic profile
- Nearly pure methyl salicylate (95-99%): dominant salicylic ester, a unique profile in aromatherapy. Most essential oils have complex profiles; wintergreen is one of the most single-molecule oils.
- Powerful and penetrating fresh-wintergreen scent: immediately recognizable — an intense, cool mint-wintergreen note, identical to classic sports preparations. Highly appreciated in diluted massage.
- The gold standard for sports massage cosmetic preparations: essential in aromatic synergies for muscle and joint massage.
- Ecocert Organic: Herbes et Traditions.

How to use this essential oil?
Topical massage only: dilute 1 to 2 drops in 5ml of carrier oil (arnica, argan, macadamia). Maximum 2% for skin application. Massage onto desired areas. Never exceed 2% dilution.
Sports massage synergy: combine with lavender or tropical basil essential oil in a carrier oil for a complete muscular synergy.
Do not diffuse: pure methyl salicylate is irritating to the respiratory tract when diffused.
Important precautions
- Essential oil to be used with caution: toxic in high doses
- Contraindicated for people allergic to aspirin / salicylates
- Contraindicated throughout pregnancy and breastfeeding
- Contraindicated for children under 12 years old
- Never ingest: pure methyl salicylate is toxic if taken orally
- Never apply to large areas of the body (significant percutaneous absorption)
- Do not combine with anticoagulant medications (salicylates)
- Avoid mucous membranes and the face
- Keep out of reach of children
FAQ
Does wintergreen smell like aspirin?
Yes, methyl salicylate is a natural precursor to salicylic acid (aspirin). The fresh-wintergreen scent and the chemical profile are closely linked. People allergic to aspirin should avoid wintergreen.
Can it be used with tropical basil in a synergy?
Yes, this is the most classic muscle massage synergy in aromatherapy: wintergreen (salicylate, cold-penetrating effect) + tropical basil (estragole, antispasmodic) in a carrier oil. Dilute to a 2% total maximum.
Why shouldn't I diffuse wintergreen?
Methyl salicylate at 95% is irritating to the respiratory tract when inhaled directly or diffused. Wintergreen should be used exclusively as a highly diluted topical application.
