Organic Bay Laurel for Herbal Tea and Cooking: Digestive, Antiseptic, and Aromatic from the Mediterranean Tradition
Are you looking for premium quality organic bay laurel for your culinary and medicinal preparations—the symbolic Mediterranean plant with digestive, antiseptic, and aromatic properties recognized since Greek and Roman antiquity? Organic Bay Laurel (Laurus nobilis) is the essential aromatic and medicinal leaf of the Mediterranean basin. Rich in cineole (eucalyptol, 30-45%), monoterpenes (alpha-terpineol, linalool), sesquiterpenes, and flavonoids, it is used traditionally for digestion, antisepsis, and general vitality. 15g of organic dried leaves. Certified Organic Agriculture.
The benefits of organic bay laurel
- Established digestive and antispasmodic: Bay laurel's eucalyptol and monoterpenes stimulate bile secretion, facilitate the digestion of fats, and relax the smooth muscles of the digestive tract. Using bay laurel as a herbal tea after a heavy meal is a traditional practice deeply rooted in Mediterranean culture.
- Antiseptic for the respiratory and digestive tracts: The cineole (eucalyptol) and alpha-pinene in bay laurel have documented antiseptic and antibacterial properties. In tea or as steam, they purify the respiratory tract.
- Nervous tonic and stimulant: Bay laurel's monoterpenes have a stimulating effect on the nervous system and circulation. It is traditionally considered a general tonic for combating fatigue and stimulating the appetite.
- The most noble of aromatic condiments: Bay laurel has been at the heart of Mediterranean cuisine since antiquity. Organic and of superior quality, it develops round, warm, and complex aromas incomparable to industrial leaves.
- Certified Organic Agriculture: No pesticides, no chemical residues.
Active ingredients and their traditional role
Cineole (1,8-eucalyptol, 30-45% of essential oil)
Cineole is the main active ingredient in bay laurel. It is a cyclic monoterpene with well-documented mucolytic, bronchial antiseptic, and digestive properties. It has a bronchodilatory, expectorant, and antiseptic action on both the upper and lower respiratory tracts. In an infusion, it provides its antiseptic and digestive properties systemically following intestinal absorption. These properties are based on traditional usage.
Alpha-terpineol and linalool
These bay laurel monoterpenes have anxiolytic and relaxing properties documented in vivo. They contribute to the tonic-balancing effect of bay laurel, explaining its traditional use as both a stimulant (for fatigue) and a soothing plant (for stress). Linalool is notably studied for its effects on the GABAergic system.
Sesquiterpenes (beta-elemene, caryophyllene)
The sesquiterpenes in bay laurel complete its anti-inflammatory and antiseptic profile. Caryophyllene is a major anti-inflammatory sesquiterpene and an agonist of CB2 receptors.
Flavonoids and phenolic acids
Quercetin, kaempferol, and caffeic and chlorogenic acids provide bay laurel's antioxidant properties and contribute to its liver and cardiovascular protection.

How to use bay laurel?
As a digestive tea: 2 leaves (about 2g) per cup in 200ml of boiling water. Steep for 8 to 10 minutes covered. Drink after heavy meals. Has a powerful, balsamic aromatic flavor.
In cooking: Add 1 to 3 leaves to broths, stocks, stews, marinades, lentils, or white beans. Remove the leaves before serving. Organic bay laurel develops a deeper and more complex aroma than conventional leaves.
As inhalation steam: Infuse 4 to 5 leaves in a bowl of very hot water. Lean over it, cover your head with a towel, and inhale the vapors for 5 to 10 minutes for congested respiratory tracts.
Precautions
- Do not confuse with cherry laurel (Prunus laurocerasus): a different and toxic plant. Ensure the plant is clearly labeled Laurus nobilis.
- Bay laurel essential oil is different and more concentrated: do not ingest the essential oil.
- Not recommended in large quantities for pregnant women (possible emmenagogue properties).
- Keep out of reach of children.
FAQ
What is the difference between bay laurel and "laurier-sauce"?
They are the same plant: bay laurel (Laurus nobilis) is also called sweet bay, Apollo's laurel, or medicinal laurel. Do not confuse it with cherry laurel (Prunus laurocerasus) or oleander (Nerium oleander), both of which are toxic and unrelated to bay laurel.
Is organic bay laurel more aromatic than conventional?
Generally, yes. Bay laurel leaves from organic farming develop a higher concentration of essential oils. The aroma is deeper, more complex, and more persistent. The difference is clearly perceptible in both cooking and tea.
Can I use fresh bay laurel from my garden?
Yes, fresh bay laurel is excellent. The advantage of the dried product is long-term storage and year-round availability without needing a garden. Use 3 fresh leaves for every 2 dried leaves.
