How does the capsaicin in Red Tiger Lotion work?

Capsaicin (Capsicum frutescens) is the analgesic active ingredient with the most documented neurophysiological evidence. It binds specifically to TRPV1 (Transient Receptor Potential Vanilloid 1) receptors, the same receptors as intense heat (>43°C). Upon the first application, capsaicin triggers a massive release of substance P (a pain neuropeptide) by C-nociceptive fibers—this is the initial burning sensation. But after a few minutes, substance P is depleted in the local nerve endings and the transmission of the pain signal is blocked for several hours. This is known as TRPV1 desensitization.
