What is Dr.Valnet's Basil essential oil?

Some botanical notions

About 30 cm tall, basil is an aromatic plant 20 to 60 centimeters high with oval-lanceolate leaves ranging from pale green to dark green. The upright, branched stems tend to become woody and bushy. Its small white flowers are grouped in long tubular spikes, in the form of elongated clusters. Basil must be prevented from flowering by pinching the tips of the stems as soon as they form, in order to increase its leaf production.

Originating in central Africa, it is believed to have been domesticated in India, then spread to Asia before being brought back to the West by the soldiers of Alexander the Great's army, 300 years BCE.

Over time, it acclimatized to the climate of southern France where it became an essential aromatic herb (especially for the famous pistou!).

A bit of history…

Its name, from the Greek basilikon (king), referred, according to legend, to a mythical winged serpent whose gaze could kill anyone who crossed it.

A symbol of royal power, in antiquity it was associated with divine power and protection, thanks to its subtle and refined fragrance.

It is said that conquerors and emperors wore a crown of basil before it was replaced by laurel.

In the Middle Ages, witches extracted an elixir of love from it.

From the 14th century, the term "basil" designated the aromatic herb we know, probably because it was presented at the tables of kings.
