What is Rosewood essential oil?
Aniba rosaeodora
(Lauraceae family)
Some botanical notions
Native to the humid forests of Amazonia and Latin America up to Guyana, rosewood is a tropical shade tree, with persistent, medium-sized leaves. Its fragrant bark and heart are pinkish in color, while its grain is fine, hard and compact, and its flowers are a very bright golden yellow. A symbol of luxury and refinement, this tree was overexploited, particularly for the cabinetmaking and perfumery industries (a very important source of linalool), before becoming a protected species. Our essential oil comes from forest operations where trees are systematically replanted.
A little history
In perfumery, rosewood oil comes from the very fragrant wood, which ranges in color from straw yellow to coppery; however, all parts of the tree can be distilled.
In cabinetmaking, the name "rosewood" refers to trees widely used in the 17th century for marquetry, of the genus Dalbergia variabilis, or Dalbergia frutescens.
The term "rosewood" comes from the English "rosewood," which more broadly refers to the Dalbergia family, consisting of different varieties of Dalbergia.
