What is Cistus ladanifer essential oil?

Some botanical notions

Mainly originating from Spain and the Mediterranean basin, cistus are shrubs that prefer dry (generally siliceous but also calcareous) and sunny soils. They also have the particularity of regenerating easily and even multiplying after fires. This explains why the Mediterranean maquis and garrigue, so often affected by forest fires, are covered with cistus thickets that bloom between spring and summer (April-June).

A little history

Its name comes from the Greek "kiste" which means "capsule", referring to the shape of its fruit. Highly prized in antiquity for its amber fragrance and numerous virtues, cistus was used in certain religious rituals and for the preparation of ointments or medicinal balms. Its gum, labdanum, was part of the composition of the sacred essences of ancient Egypt with frankincense, cedar, myrrh, and benzoin.
