What is organic Cypress essential oil?
Cupressus sempervirens
(Cupressaceae family)
A few botanical notions
Originally from Asia Minor, this conifer with a slender silhouette and persistent, evergreen foliage has adapted very well to the Mediterranean basin regions. Recognizable by its slender size, it has lignified roots that allow it to remain very stable despite its height (it can reach 50 meters high). Its triangular scale-shaped leaves, arranged in opposite pairs crossing at right angles, completely cover the branches. It is planted to protect land from wind or pollution, but also and especially in cemeteries.
A little history…
Nicknamed "the tree of silence," cypress is the symbol of mourning, eternity, and life after death. In Greek mythology, it was associated with Pluto, the god of the Underworld. The Phoenicians, Assyrians, Romans, and Greeks used its very dense and reputed rot-proof wood for building ships, temple doors, and sarcophagi.
In ancient China, cypress seeds were consumed to live longer.
According to legend, rubbing one's feet with cypress resin would make the body lighter and allow one to walk on water…
For centuries, popes have been laid to rest in a cypress coffin. The Franciscan monastery Santo Toribio de Liébana, in Spain, possesses a relic of what Catholics consider the true Cross of Christ, a scientific expertise carried out in 1958 certifying its composition as Cupressus sempervirens, found among other places in Palestine.
