What is Organic Eucalyptus Globulus essential oil?
Eucalyptus globulus
(Myrtaceae family)
Some botanical notions
Eucalyptus globulus, also called "blue gum," is a very tall tree that can reach 55 meters in height. Native to Australia, of the "globular" species, it is one of the many eucalyptus trees that have best adapted to the European climate. Its bark peels off in long ribbons, and its leaves, which grow in pairs, are blue-grey. Its Latin name refers to the shape of the operculum of its fruit. Its cream-colored flowers are a very important source of pollen and nectar for bees and other pollinating insects.
A little history...
With very rapid growth, eucalyptus globulus was very often planted to dry out and sanitize humid areas, which were conducive to the development of malaria and paludism, hence its nickname "fever tree."
Renowned for their antiseptic properties, its leaves were traditionally used to treat wounds, but also for colds.
For millennia, dried eucalyptus globulus leaves have been part of traditional pharmacopoeia in Australia, Africa, and China.
