What is Organic Juniper Essential Oil?

A few botanical notes

Native to the mountainous regions of the northern hemisphere, juniper, also known as "poor man's pepper," is a wild and robust thorny shrub, measuring between 4 and 15 meters high. It is characterized by its very specific cones, called "galbules" (commonly called berries), composed of scales more or less fused together. It produces an edible dark blue fruit called a juniper berry, used for the production of essential oil, but also for juniper alcohol, the ancestor of gin, highly appreciated in northern France and Belgium.

A bit of history…

Juniper has been renowned for centuries for its antiseptic and purifying properties. Its leaves and flowering tops were used for their purgative virtues, and its wood was burned in antiquity and the Middle Ages during major epidemics. It is even claimed that it helped Hippocrates fight the plague in Athens. The Romans heated it to obtain cade oil, which was used for washing the dead, while the Egyptians used it to treat arthritis, gout, and rheumatic diseases. Juniper wood also went into the composition of their ointments and perfumes, notably in that of the famous "kyphi," considered, it is said, as the ancestor of our eau de toilette.

In the 1930s, an incense burner dating from about a thousand years before Christ, containing fragments of juniper wood, was found in Crete.

In hospitals, until the 19th century, juniper berries were still burned to sanitize and purify the ambient air.
