Organic Patchouli Essential Oil

Are you looking for an essential oil with a deep, enveloping, earthy-woody fragrance, rich in the sesquiterpene patchoulol—one of the most iconic, persistent, and fascinating base notes in natural perfumery—for diffusion synergies and cosmetic care? Herbes et Traditions Organic Patchouli EO (Pogostemon cablin) is distilled from fermented patchouli leaves. Rich in patchoulol (30-40%) and norpatchoulenol, it is one of the essential oils with the highest olfactory fixity—its note lingers for hours after diffusion. 10ml. Ecocert organic certified.

Aromatic and cosmetic profile

  • Rich in patchoulol (30-40%): a sesquiterpene alcohol specific to patchouli, responsible for its characteristic earthy-woody fragrance and exceptional olfactory persistence.
  • Deep and persistent earthy-woody fragrance: an iconic base note in perfumery—earthy, sweet camphor, damp woods. Evolves and improves over time (aging of the EO). The note can be divisive: highly appreciated or very distinct depending on individual sensitivities.
  • Fixative and amplifier in natural perfumery: patchouli fixes and amplifies other notes in aromatic synergies. One or two drops are enough to anchor a blend.
  • 10ml: Ecocert Organic. Herbes et Traditions.

How to use this essential oil?

Diffusion: 1 to 3 drops maximum. The note is very persistent—a little goes a long way. Combines well with sandalwood, vanilla, vetiver, or rose for deep and enveloping accords.

Natural perfume: 1 drop diluted on the wrists or neck as a base note for a natural perfume.

Cosmetic care: 1-2% in a carrier oil (jojoba, argan) for an earthy-woody aromatic body treatment.

FAQ

Does patchouli improve with age?
Yes, it is one of the few essential oils whose fragrance improves and mellows with aging. A 2 to 5-year-old patchouli EO is often finer and rounder than a fresh EO. Store away from light and heat to optimize this aging process.

Why is patchouli associated with the 70s?
During the 60s and 70s, patchouli was one of the most popular natural scents among the hippie and counterculture movements, partly for its earthy-natural aspect and its ability to mask other odors. It remains one of the most distinctive and recognizable notes of that era.

Can you combine patchouli and ylang-ylang?
Yes, it is one of the most classic and sensual scented accords in natural perfumery. Patchouli (earthy base note) + ylang-ylang (floral-exotic heart note): a highly appreciated warm and enveloping synergy.
