Ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba) is one of the oldest trees on the planet, often referred to as a "living fossil" because it has remained virtually unchanged for over 200 million years. Its fan-shaped leaves, bright green in spring and golden yellow in autumn, have been used in phytotherapy for centuries in traditional Chinese and Japanese medicine.

Botanical overview

Ginkgo biloba is the only living representative of the Ginkgoaceae family and the Ginkgoales order. It is a large dioecious tree that can live for several millennia and reach 30 to 40 meters in height. Its characteristic two-lobed, fan-shaped leaves (hence the name biloba) are deciduous and bright green in color. The tree is widely cultivated in Europe as an ornamental tree and for its medicinal uses.

The leaves contain specific glycosylated flavonoids (ginkgoflavonols: quercetin, kaempferol, isorhamnetin), terpene lactones (ginkgolides A, B, C, J and bilobalide), proanthocyanidins, and organic acids. Standardized ginkgo extracts (EGb 761) have been the subject of the majority of clinical research.

Aromatic and flavor profile

The infusion of ginkgo leaves offers a light golden to greenish liquor. Its taste is herbaceous and slightly bitter, with subtle astringency. The aroma is mild and slightly woody. It is a sober herbal tea, without very pronounced notes, which is well-appreciated when combined with more aromatic plants such as mint or verbena.

How to prepare the infusion

  • Quantity: 1 teaspoon of dried leaves (approx. 1 to 1.5 g) per cup
  • Water: simmering, about 90°C
  • Steeping: 8 to 10 minutes, covered
  • Filter and enjoy warm
  • Frequency: 1 to 2 cups per day

FAQ

Is Herberry's organic ginkgo biloba certified?

Yes, these ginkgo leaves are certified organic, free of pesticides or synthetic chemical inputs.

What is the difference between ginkgo leaf tea and concentrated extracts?

The standardized ginkgo extracts (EGb 761, 24% flavonoids and 6% terpene lactones) found in dietary supplements are much more concentrated than the herbal tea. Dried leaf tea is a form of traditional use, milder, with a variable and non-standardized content of active ingredients.

Why is ginkgo called the "maidenhair tree"?

This nickname refers to the golden color and rounded shape of its leaves in autumn, which resemble gold coins. In Japanese, ginkgo is designated by a term that gave its French name "arbre aux mille écus" (tree of a thousand crowns): "gin" (silver) and "kyo" (apricot), in reference to its fruits.

How should I store my bag of ginkgo biloba?

Keep away from direct light, heat, and humidity. Consume preferably within 12 months of opening.
